What are wrinkles and fine lines?
While fine lines are the shallow, more subtle creases caused by early skin changes and muscle movements, wrinkles are deeper, more noticeable and occur as fine lines mature due to collagen and elastin loss, resulting in reduced firmness, hydration and elasticity. Fine lines are typically less than 1mm deep and usually appear first around the mouth and eyes; wrinkles are more permanent.
Sun damage, smoking, dehydration, a lack of sleep, stress, hormonal changes and genetics all play their part. But lines and wrinkles are an ordinary part of the process of getting older which we all go through.
We can also distinguish between static lines, which you can see all the time, and dynamic ones which you don’t notice while the complexion is at rest.
In terms of what you can do yourself, think about SPF protection to avoid sun damage, eat a balanced diet and stay hydrated. Prioritise sleep, stress management and, if you smoke, consider kicking the habit. Controlling alcohol and sugar intake is also important, as is a consistent skincare routine.
Various treatments are available for fine lines and wrinkles, and some procedures help both issues. You could choose to have more than one for the most effective results, but decide what would work best for you in consultation with a dermatologist or beauty specialist. Here are some examples:
Fine line treatments
- Botulinum toxin
Botox, or botulinum toxin to give it its full name, can treat fine lines, particularly around the mouth, eyes and forehead. It works by temporarily relaxing the facial muscles which cause the problem.
- Facial fillers
These restore volume and smooth out lines and shape the skin, with results apparent almost immediately. It involves injecting gel-like substances, most often made from hyaluronic acid.
- Microneedling
This stimulates natural collagen production in the skin, to enhance its texture and reduce the appearance of fine lines.
- Polynucleotides
Polynucleotides are bio-stimulators which boost collagen production, DNA synthesis and skin repair, leading to a firmer, smoother skin with a better tone.
- Chemical peels
Mild or moderate versions of chemical peels can smooth away fine lines and enhance skin tone.
- LED Phototherapy
This light-based therapy energises the skin cells to encourage natural repair and regeneration, which again softens the appearance of fine lines.
Treating deeper wrinkles
If you’re dealing with deeper wrinkles on your complexion, you can have many of the same treatments, including anti wrinkle treatment, dermal fillers, microneedling and chemical peels. Other non-surgical options include the use of sound waves and radiofrequency devices, both of which create heat for firmer skin.
You can also have anti-wrinkle treatment preventatively if lines are already visible. What’s more, because treatment works on the muscles, it can even help with other issues, including teeth grinding or clenching, which may cause headaches plus other problems. At the same, treatment can make the face look slimmer and prevent a pebbled look in the neck and chin.
