LED light facials: what are they – and what are the benefits?

If you’re not already familiar with the concept, an LED facial is a non-invasive skincare treatment which harnesses the power of light-emitting diodes (or LEDs) and the body’s own natural processes to rejuvenate the complexion and energise the skin cells. The different colours of light involved (such as yellow, blue or red) penetrate the skin at different depths, causing particular cellular reactions which address various skin issues.

The light energy stimulates the skin to renew cells, visibly restore radiance and boost collagen production and repair.

And because LEDs emit light at specific wavelengths, this procedure targets myriad concerns. For example, red light stimulates the production of collagen, which enhances skin firmness and lessens the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles while boosting the elasticity of your complexion.

For its part, blue light kills the bacteria which produce acne, and reduces oil production. But not only does it lessen inflammation and help clear up acne, it goes a long way to actively preventing future breakouts. Meanwhile, green light helps to fade dark spots while evening out skin tone by targeting pigment-producing cells.

If your skin has experienced sun damage, LED light therapy will assist with repair and lessen the appearance of hyperpigmentation. (In which some patches of skin become darker than the surrounding area.) And because LED facials promote cell turnover and collagen production, this treatment also improves general skin tone, texture and hydration.

Finally, LED light facials tend to speed up wound and scar healing, while many people also find they ease aching muscles and provide pain relief.

LED facial downtime and treatment combinations

You can have them as a standalone treatment or in combination with another procedure, such as microneedling, for a more bespoke experience. And because these facials are so gentle, you won’t need any time off work – most people actually find the sessions quite relaxing.

Talk to your skincare professional and discuss the best way forward for you. Although collagen increases after just one treatment, you’ll most likely need a few sessions to feel the maximum benefit.
